Overview

Town Hill is a diverse village that was once an active farming community providing produce for the whole island. The farms of years past are mostly gone, but Town Hill still provides access to the entire island from its strategic location.

Location

Advantageously located at the head of Mount Desert Island, Town Hill is 30 minutes from Ellsworth, 25 minutes from Bar Harbor, and 25 Minutes from Southwest Harbor. Its location allows easy access to the many offerings upon the mainland and Mount Desert Island.

Town Hill has various specialty and local stores, a bank, and service stations. The village has Bed and Breakfasts, inns, campgrounds, and restaurants all in a central proximity.

Activities

From Town Hill one can easily access the busier Bar Harbor or the quiet Southwest Harbor for hiking, sailing, bicycling, shopping, wildlife exploration, or kayaking.

From its location, visitors can also explore the Asticou Gardens, Thuya Lodge and Gardens, and all the trails, carriage paths, and Ocean Drive within Acadia National Park.

Ferries from Bar Harbor to Acadia National Park's Schoodic Peninsula, Northeast Harbor to the outer islands, Southwest Harbor to the outer islands, and Bass Harbor to Swan's Island all are moments away from Town Hill.

Getting Here

If traveling from the south, follow I-95 to Bangor. Follow I-395 to 1A until Ellsworth, where state routes 1 and 3 will eventually lead to Bar Harbor.

Visitors who are taking scenic Coastal Maine's Route 1 will travel through many communities offering small novelty shops, factory outlets, and dining. Eventually arriving on Main Street in Ellsworth, which is lined with many more shops, and restaurants offering visitors the chance to find special gifts, and souvenirs. From there visitors can take High Street, which ME-3 and US- 1A merge together, to the head Mount Desert Island, bear right onto ME-102, and ME-198 directly into Town Hill.
