Hancock County - Bar Harbor Airport

The year round Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport is the closest airport to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park.

  • Airport Code: BHB
  • Location: BHB is located in Trenton, which is just over the Mount Desert Narrows from Mount Desert Island. Follow 3A east from the airport and drive ten miles to Bar Harbor.
  • Airlines: Cape Air offers flights to/from Boston year-round. PenAir offers seasonal flights to Boston as well. Numerous private jets use the airport in summer.
  • Airport Services: Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport has modern facilities and a range of visitor services. Scenic biplane, airplane, and glider rides are available from the airport.
  • Getting To/From the Airport:
    -Hertz provides year round car rental services and Enterprises provides seasonal car rental service.
    -Taxi service is available from the airport.
    -From the end of June through early October, the Island Explorer provides free bus service between the airport and Bar Harbor.
    -Door-to-door airport shuttles, vans, sedans, and limos serve the Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport.

Bangor International Airport

Bangor International Airport is 50 miles from Bar Harbor and is the closest international airport to Mount Desert Island.

  • Airport Code: BGR
  • Location: The drive from BGR to Bar Harbor usually takes a little over one hour, but summer traffic can add time to the trip. From the airport take I-95 S a short distance to I-395 E, in the outskirts of Bangor. Take I-395 five miles and merge onto US-1A to Ellsworth. From there follow ME-3 E to Bar Harbor.
  • Airlines: Allegiant, Delta, and American Airlines offer direct daily flights to several cities. The top ten cities Bangor International Airport travelers fly to and from are: Orlando, New York City, Tampa, Atlanta, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit and Washington DC. Currently no scheduled international flights leave BGR.
  • Airport Services: BGR has three gates in one building. The airport offers free WiFi and has an ATM. Two shops sell gifts, reading materials, and travel amenities. A coffee shop and a lounge provide food and drink.
  • Getting To/From the Airport:
    -A number of local inns and motels offer free shuttle service to and from the airport.
    -Rental cars are available at the airport.
    -Many limousines and taxis serve BGR. Several provide service to Bar Harbor for about $60.00.
    -The Bar Harbor-Bangor Shuttle makes daily trips between Bangor and Bar Harbor.
    -Bangor Area Transportation Company (BAT) provides scheduled bus service throughout Bangor and the surrounding towns, making frequent stops at the airport.
    -Concord Trailways runs express bus service between Bangor, Portland, and Boston. The Concord Trailways station is ¾ mile from the airport.
    -Greyhound buses operate express service between Bangor, Portland, and Boston. Some years Greyhound offers summer service to Bar Harbor. The Greyhound bus station is accessible from the airport by taxi or local bus (BAT).

Portland International Airport

Located in South Portland, Maine, the Portland International Jetport offers a small, regional alternative to larger, busier airports.

  • Airport Code: PWM.
  • Location: The 175-mile trip from the Portland Jetport to Bar Harbor typically takes 3 ¼ hours, but summer traffic may make the drive take longer. From the Jetport take I-295 N, which becomes I-95 N in 50 miles. Follow I-95 N for 80 miles. Take Exit 182A in Bangor and merge onto I-395 E. After 5 miles merge onto US-1A E. In Ellsworth merge onto ME 3E to Bar Harbor.
  • Airlines: Air Canada, AirTran, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, JetBlue, United, and American Airlines.
  • Airport Services: The Jetport is fully handicapped accessible and offers free WiFi. The single terminal building has a gift shop, newsstand, visitor information center, ATM, dog-walking area, snack bar, lounge, and restaurant.
  • Getting to/From the Airport:
    -Rental cars and taxi service are available. A number of companies provide car services, limousines, and vans. Many local hotels offer courtesy airport van service.
    -Greater Portland Transit District METRO links the jetport with the Amtrak Downeaster train station and the Vermont Transit and Concord Trailways bus stations.
    -Vermont Transit and Concord Trailways buses link Portland with Boston and Bangor. Ground transportation to Bar Harbor is available in Bangor.

Boston Logan International Airport

Boston Logan International Airport is a large airport with modern safety and convenience features. It is the largest airport within a half-day drive of Bar Harbor.

  • Location: From Boston Logan International Airport, visitors can take public or private transportation to North Station to pick up train service to Portland or to South Station to pick up bus service to Portland and Bangor. Travelers have several transportation options to get from Portland or Bangor to Bar Harbor. The 280-mile drive from Boston to Bar Harbor takes about 5¼ hours.
  • Airlines: Boston Logan offers nonstop service to over 70 domestic and 30 international destinations from nearly 50 airlines.
  • Airport Services: Logan airport has a full range of visitor services, including shops, lounges, restaurants, ATM, and free WiFi.
  • Getting To/From the Airport:
    -Public transportation through MBTA takes travelers from Boston Logan International Airport to South Station and North Station, from which they can take buses or the train, respectively, into Maine for links to Bar Harbor.
    -Limousines, taxis, shared vans, and private car services are also available to take passengers from the airport to South Station and North Station.
    -Rental cars are available.
