Independence Day is a major holiday for all Americans, celebrated in style across the country with barbecues, dancing, music, live entertainment and firework displays that make July 4th memorable year after year. However, Maine’s Bar Harbor, nestled against the backdrop of some of the state’s most scenic eastern coastline, offers a day of fun and fireworks that are truly spectacular.
Each year, Bar Harbor hosts its own town 4th of July celebrations, honouring the independence of the United States from the British Empire in its own unique and fun way. The day’s events begin at 6am with a tantalizing blueberry type pancake feast, a breakfast hosted by the local Rotary Club at the Bar Harbor Athletic Field on Park Street. Visitors and locals alike savor home cooked pancakes, mounds of lush local blueberries, sizzling sausages and plenty of morning coffee, a kick start to a day filled with fun and adventure.
Families, friends, locals, tourists and business people flock to the YMCA’s Craft Fair and Marketplace for the Island Arts Association’s Craft Fair (9am to 3pm) for the July 4th Bar Harbor’s fund raiser. There is something for everyone with a choice selection of local crafts such as dolls, pottery, photos, quilts and jewellery.
For those who wish to enjoy fun, humor and patriotism, the Independence Day Parade is a real crowd pleaser. Starting at 10am, going from the town’s Main Street to Ledgelawn Avenue, the parade winds through the town center, hosting varied different themes each year. Floats, animals and other characters adorn the streets, delighting children and adults alike.
At 11am, the Bar Harbor Athletic Field begins its annual Seafood Festival. The air is filled with mouth-watering wafts of strawberry shortcake, corn on the cob, mussels and lobster. However, eating is just part of the thrill as local business people race against the clock in a lobster-ish cooking contest, much to the delight of the hungry crowd.
From 7:30pm to 8:30pm, the Bar Harbor Village Green comes to live with the sounds and talents of amateur local musicians who play in the Bar Harbor Town Band for a free concert for one and all. People flock to the bandstand from around the area, combining locals visitors and thousands of tourists for a foot stomping hour.
As the day’s activities and events wind down, the crowds converge at Bar Harbor’s waterfront to find a spot overlooking Frenchman’s Bay. As the darkness overtakes the town, around 9:15pm, fireworks dance across the night sky and the happy cheers of the crowds fill the air as the finale unfolds. In fact, Bar Harbor’s fireworks are amongst the best in the region.
