Maine Turnpike
A fast and efficient way to travel between Kittery, Maine and Augusta, Maine or to any point in between, is to take the Maine Turnpike. The planning for and the initial construction of the Maine Turnpike began in the 1940’s and via continuing updating and expansion, the Turnpike is now a major artery which moves millions of vehicles and their passengers up and down near the coast of Maine. more info
When construction began on the Maine Turnpike in the 1940’s, the need existed to provide a travel path for the millions of locals and visitors to the coast of Maine. The concept was to built a toll road that would help pay for itself, by charging for its use. Maine Turnpike begins at milepost 2 in Kittery and continues to milepost 109 near Augusta. At both ends of the Turnpike, the road continues as free Interstate 95.
The Turnpike has continued to be improved since its inception. As of January, 2004, the roadway became a part of the National Road system and is now a part of Interstate 95.You can pay a flat fee toll when you enter the system or, as recently as 2005, the system became a part of the E-Z Pass network.
There are six service areas located along the Turnpike – three in each direction. Each service area is open 24 hours, has an ATM and provides food and fuel. Some of the service areas have additional amenities including small gift shops.
