Bar Harbor / Winter Harbor Ferry
Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor are situated in the eastern side of coastal Maine, right on the Atlantic Ocean. They have a joint ferry that connects both townships during the summer months. Many thousands of visitors and locals alike use the ferry for both business, recreation and other types of trips, giving everyone a peaceful and affordable seaside adventure that should not be missed.
A ferry runs daily from June to August from Maine’s Mount Desert Island townships of Winter Harbor and Bar Harbor. Used for getting to and from varied events, activities and other parts of the island, the ferry is an affordable and fun way to see these stunning areas of the Acadia Region.

Passengers aboard the Bar Harbor/Winter Harbor summer ferry are rewarded with a safe form of travel and so much to see and do. As the ferry makes the short crossing from township to township, visitors can see lobstermen catching local famous and large lobsters, some of which may end up on their dinner plates later in the evening. Other spectacular views include picturesque mansion homes, other local harbors and fishing type villages, towering distant mountains and traditional style Maine lighthouses.
For those wishing to visit the Acadia National Park, free Island Explorer buses are available at both Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor ferry terminals. This bus also gives easy access to Prospect Harbor, Birch Harbor and Schoodic Point.
Winter Harbor and Bar Harbor are two township destinations that should be included on any vacation itinery to the Acadia Region. Best of all, the ferry allows tourists to enjoy both communities with ease and wander around the historical roads and centers of each location.
The ferry allows visitors to Winter Harbor to enjoy the township’s scenic and busy waterfront. Other attractions on offer include the quiet and peaceful community events, varied shops and highly renowned seafood and other restaurants and cafes. In fact, the ferry trip to Winter Harbor lets cyclists enjoy a twelve mile type loop from the harbor to nearby Schoodic Point, a stunning viewpoint of Acadia National Park.
Due to the frequency of the ferry runs, visitors can enjoy not just the wonders of Winter Harbor, but also those of Bar Harbor within the same day. Bar Harbor’s ferry terminal is just a short step from its entrance to Acadia National Park and varied shops, museums and restaurants.
The Bar Harbor/Winter Harbor ferry runs from Monday to Sunday, from late June to the end of August each year. Ferries depart Bar Harbor starting at 8:30am until 6pm, running hourly on the half hour in the morning and then hourly on the hour in the afternoon until the last run. However, other runs are available upon special request.
Tickets for the ferry are fairly priced, with one way and return tickets for adults and children. An additional charge is levied for those bringing bicycles. For those using the ferry for commuting, special rates are also on hand. Tickets can be purchased on the ferries. For frequent travellers, special passes, including seasonal, monthly and weekly passes are available, but must be booked in advance.
