Cross-country skiing, hiking, ice fishing, wildlife viewing and snowshoeing are all wonderful winter activities. Travelers here during the winter crave the feel of the ocean air while walking through the snow covered forests and meadows. Acadia National Park's northerly location along the rugged coastline of Maine, make it a fantastic place to enjoy the seaside snow. The brisk air that blows in from the ocean actually moderates the air temperature, so the winter coldness is not as extreme as that found in the interior of the continent.
There are forty-five miles of carriage roads and nearly forty-one miles of unplowed park roads, which are ideal for snowshoeing. Usually when the snow level reaches four inches, the fun begins. The roads are laid out so that they are hidden from the thoroughfare and yet provide the most scenic vistas possible.
