Snowmobiling
Between 1915 and 1933, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. financed and directed the building of 57 miles of carriage roads in Acadia National Park. These networks of woodland roads are free of motor vehicles and are used for hikers, bicyclists, horseback riders and carriages. Activities on these carriage roads during the winter include cross-country skiing and limited snowmobiling. more info
The limited snowmobiling in Acadia National Park can truly be a once in a lifetime experience. Very few places on earth have the geographic make up that allows a person to enjoy snowmobiling so close to coastal waters in such a picturesque area. The carriage roads provide a great trail system for snowmobiling and allow the winter visitor to enjoy all the sights and sounds of the Park that can only be seen during that time of year.
Although summer is the favorite time of year for many visitors, traveling to Acadia National Park in the winter can also be a rewarding and adventure filled experience.
