When it comes to finding things to do and see in Bar Harbor, not a month goes by during the summer without adventure.  Known for its art, music and proximity to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor never ceases to entertain and please.  The Bar Harbor Working Waterfront Celebration is an annual invitation open to visitors and locals that honors seafarers, past and present.

The Celebration runs from May 31 to June 1 annually.  It commences with a gathering at the Seafarers’ Memorial, along the harbor, for a remembrance service to honor those who lost their lives at sea.  The local fishing fleet that works out of the Bar Harbor area is blessed and then the weekend of seafaring fun and adventure begins.

The first night sees the Bar Harbor Working Waterfront Celebration kicking off with the Kebo Valley Golf Club Dance.  The dance starts at 6:30pm and continues until 7:30pm.  Tickets are reasonable and available at the door, including beer and appetizers.  Tickets can be purchased from the office of the harbourmaster, the local chamber of commerce and Downeast Fishing Gear.  Dance music is generally rock-n-roll, including a broad selection of 70’s and 80’s tunes.

The second day events start at 12pm at the Seafarer’s Memorial with another service and boats’ blessing at Bar Harbor’s pier.  Thereafter, visitors and locals can partake in games, treasure hunting, touching tanks and fund raising events.  Lots of food and drinks are on hand thanks to local restaurants, cafes and seafaring vendors, including hot dogs, chowders, hamburgers and cotton candy.  In the afternoon, everyone can join in traditional fair type races, including boat blindfolding and bait bag stuffing.

The Bar Harbor Waterfront Celebration is easy to get to, with parking on West Street.  The pier is located right on the waterfront and admission is free.  However, donations and proceeds go to support injured seafarers through the Seafarers’ fund.
