Overview: New Year’s Eve in Bar Harbor, Maine, offers a night of fun and excitement for the entire family, including kids.  It offers a series of events, food and activities for all ages that include fine dining and live entertainment.

Where: Events take place around Bar Harbor including the Arts Center, Criterion Theatre and various spots in town.

When: The eve before the new year begins, Dec 31st each year. Dinners and events run throughout the evening.

Cost: Most of the events are free, but the restaurants and hotels host their own activities, some of which require tickets to be booked well in advance.

Details: Bar Harbor’s New Year’s Eve Celebration or First Night Celebration is held throughout the town at varied venues and with a multitude of activities for singletons, couples, retirees and families with children.  Special dinners and dancing events are held by local restaurants, cafes, bars and hotels.  Bonfires are common sites, drawing in families in the early evening.

In the town center, a huge bonfire runs from 5pm to 7pm.  Everyone, including kids, can enjoy games and lots of hot chocolate.  Special exhibitions and Christmas crafts sales adorn the streets, the Arts Center and the Criterion Theatre throughout the evening.

The main New Year’s Eve event starts at 9pm and runs through until the early hours in most places.  Families can flock to the Arts Center for the ringing in of the New Year, singing ‘Auld Lang’s Ayne’, Christmas songs and carols and share a drink or two, fruit juice for the kids. 

Local pubs offer special feasts with appetizers and desserts, followed by glasses of champagne.  Varied restaurants offer full course meals, including appetizers, liqueurs, salads, main courses, desserts, coffee, drinks and end of the evening champagne.

Though not every event on New Year’s Eve in Bar Harbor is designed for families with kids, many smaller events are available through local community organizers.  Events listings for Bar Harbor’s New Year are available through the local chamber of commerce calendar and local newspaper. 

Accommodations during the New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Bar Harbor are hard to find.  Therefore it is recommended that visitors book their lodgings well in advance, at least a month ahead of time.
