The Acadia Region is home to many festivals, including musical ones. Jazz is a popular choice of many music lovers and Bar Harbor in Maine offers no exceptions when it comes to jazz entertainment. The Bar Harbor Jazz Festival is unique, combining local, international and regional jazz talents, ranging from professionals to amateurs. In fact, the festival is one of the main contributing voices of jazz across the United States.
The Bar Harbor Jazz Festival has a large following. Each year thousands flock to the town’s streets for a variety of jazz events.
The festival runs in late August. The first events are held at the Lompoc and the Village Green. Featured jazz bands and musicians showcase their talents in the evenings from 6pm until the wee hours of the night. Other events include the Aurora Jazz Project, a jazz jamming session held in Bar Harbor’s Agamont Park. However, the jazz festival runs rain or shine, retreating into Carmen Verandah which is situated near the Village Green.
There are seven main venues that host the Bar Harbor Jazz Festival. Agamont Park is located on Main and West Streets, close to Bar Harbor’s main waterfront harbor. The Village Green is situated on the corner of Mount Desert and Main Streets. The Bar Harbor Club is on West Street and offers food, drinks, dancing and live jazz music. Carmen Verandah is a local restaurant on Main Street, hosting varied jazz musicians and fine dining and drinks. The Lompoc Cafe on Cottage Street offers a small, but lively jazz location with a more sophisticated flair. McKay’s Public House is the local Main Street pub that attracts a lively jazz loving crowd and offers drinks and food well into the wee hours. Rupununi is a fine restaurant with a great setting for jazz and dining.
Jazz is the main highlight of the Bar Harbor Jazz Festival. It is a major Maine event that for jazz lovers should not be missed. However, it is a free event and encourages jazz music appreciation, not just for the adult crowd. Even children get into the musical flow.
