The name of the region of Maine known as Downeast comes from the days when cargo was transported along the east coast by sailing vessels known as schooners. The winds in the area blow from the southeast, toward the east, which caused the sailing vessels to travel down wind.  There are three distinct areas encompassing the Downeast area of Maine. You can enjoy the quiet beauty of hundreds of miles of rugged coastline, or spend time inland, relaxing and listening to the loons on a freshwater lake or canoeing on one of the rivers, or you can travel to area rich with wildlife. Regardless of where you decide to visit, you will find fantastic places to "hang your hat" after a great day of adventure. You can stay at any of a number of Bed and Breakfasts, hotels, motels, inns, or other vacation rentals.
