Museum of Natural History
The George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History can be found on the College of the Atlantic campus, between the Ferry Terminal and downtown Bar Harbor on Route 3. The original headquarters of Acadia National Park, the buildings have been expanded by renovations to provide an excellent place for displays, activities and programs. The Museum of Natural History is conveniently located near downtown Bar Harbor and if you do not have a car, you can take the Island Explorer Shuttle Bus that makes daily stops at the Museum all summer.
The student-produced dioramas demonstrate native species in their natural and human-altered environments. An indoor tide pool enables the visitor to observe the typical inhabitants of a tide pool up close. Many of the displays and exhibits depict environmental scenes designed to engage the visitor’s emotions and thus, create a deeper educational impact. The natural history learning experience is encouraged by the diversity of programs.
Each day throughout the summer, you can participate in marine tank explorations, various interpretive programs, weekly lecture series and field studies. Year round, you can participate in various family activities to include story hours and a film series. Arrangements can also be made for special school field trips.
Open Monday through Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm from mid- June through Labor Day. From Labor Day through mid-June, the Museum is open by appointment. Admission fees are $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for seniors, $1.50 for teens, children $1.00, children under 3 are free.
