Mount Desert Oceanarium
You can get a "hands on" experience at each of the two locations for the Mount Desert Oceanarium. The Bar Harbor location includes the Maine Lobster Museum, a Salt Marsh Tour and a Lobster Hatchery. The Southwest Harbor location includes an angler's museum and a marine aquarium. If you buy a combination ticket to both locations, you will receive a 25% discount. more info
The Mount Desert Oceanarium is a great place for young and old alike to have a real up close and personal experience with the marine biology of Maine. Recognized as a leader in the effort to involve visitors with a “hands on” experience, each visitor is invited to look at different and unique marine creatures from baby starfish, to lobsters, to crabs, to shrimp, to a variety of ocean fish and adult seals. Lobster fishing in the nearby Atlantic Ocean is also a popular activity. Much like a petting zoo, the Oceanarium even features a “petting pool”. For those who want to take home a memento of their visit, there is a gift shop where you can purchase items about, of or from the ocean.
All facilities are open daily 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, except on Sundays, from mid May until late October.
