Bar Harbor, Maine is a tourism-based seaside community having all the delights and charm of a typical seaside town. The community has ships and shops and restaurants. However, more than that, Bar Harbor is surrounded by Acadia National Park. Acadia is home to some of the most awe-inspiring scenery found anywhere along the eastern seaboard.
Bar Harbor, Maine is the largest community on Mount Desert Island. During the late 19th Century, Bar Harbor became the premier summer resort. Wealthy families from the Northeastern United States built elaborate summer homes here and the group of "cottages" became known as Millionaires Row. These fantastic summer estates with their manicured landscapes were home to some of the most powerful families in America at the time including the Rockefellers, Fords, Carnegies, Astors and Morgans.
Today, the community of Bar Harbor is still a summer resort, and the economy is fuelled by the thousands of tourists who come to visit the area. The summer season now stretches into the fall, as the visitors come to enjoy the vibrant fall foliage.
In addition to its proximity to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor has a multitude of family oriented activities including a nature camp, a zoo, an Oceanarium and even a lumberjack show. The Abbe Museum has an extensive display of artifacts of the Wabenaki Indians – the first inhabitants of the area.
There is truly something for everyone in the quaint community of Bar Harbor, Maine. Tourists and locals alike enjoy rock climbing, sailing, paddling, brewery tours and golf. Bar Harbor is also the point of embarkation for a number of harbor and whale-watching cruises. The works of Maine artists and sculptors are featured in many of the top-notch boutiques and shops.
