College of the Atlantic
The College of the Atlantic is a very small, private, nonsectarian, coeducational, liberal arts school located in Bar Harbor, Maine. The main campus is located on 35 acres on Frenchman Bay with 81 additional acres that are an organic farm. The College also has two research stations which are located on an off shore island. With an enrollment of approximately 300 students, the College courses focus on the sustainability of the environment.
The College of the Atlantic is a very small school that is making a very big difference. Every student here majors in Human Ecology. Human Ecology is the study of the relationship of humans to their environment. Each student is allowed to design their own course of study, making it an education full of creativity, investigation, and community.
The ultimate mission of the College of the Atlantic is to facilitate the understanding of human relationship to the environment and to do something to improve that relationship. Graduates here receive a degree in Human Ecology that enables them to make a difference rather their first love is science or the arts, education, public policy or any field.
Prior to graduation, each senior is required to create an original project that represents the total of his or her work while at the College of the Atlantic. Senior projects have included a novel, a scientific research paper, an art show, and the creation of a new non-profit organization.
