In the past, Bar Harbor, Maine was a small community that focused on shipbuilding and fishing. However, today the town of Bar Harbor has become the activity center for Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Tourism has become an important economic factor for the community.
In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, Bar Harbor was known worldwide as the summer home for wealthy families. The rich and famous would flock to Bar Harbor to get away from the summer heat of their year round homes in the metropolitan areas of the Northeast. Today, many of the grand summer homes have been renovated into historic hotels and beds and breakfasts.
