The Schoodic Peninsula is the only portion of Acadia National Park that is located on the mainland. It is a beautiful place to visit. This section of Acadia provides majestic views of Mount Desert Island and Cadillac Mountain. The Peninsula is also a great place to be introduced to Downeast Maine life.

Just four miles east of Bar Harbor, Maine – that is if you could travel in a straight line – you will find Schoodic Peninsula. This area of the Park is easy to see across Frenchman Bay, but if traveling via road from Bar Harbor, the trip is approximately 45 miles and takes nearly an hour by car. On the other hand, you can take the Ferry service, which is available seven days a week from the later part of June through September.

This tip of Maine contains 2,266 acres and comprises nearly 5% of the total area of Acadia National Park. Franklin, Sorrento, Sullivan, Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor are the communities located here. This portion of Acadia National Park is much less crowded. Here you will find a rocky granite shoreline and tide pools, as well as hiking trails and picnic areas. The hiking trails are short, but it is easy to explore the area's rocky coast and to locate fantastic views just above the ocean waters of the Atlantic.

The majority of the Schoodic Peninsula is accessible on a 7-mile one-way loop road. Along the road, you will come upon the highest point in this area of the Park, Schoodic Head that rises 440 feet above sea level. A short hike allows you to reach the summit of Schoodic Head where you are treated to majestic views. When traveling to Acadia National Park, make sure you include Schoodic Peninsula in your explorations.
