Sand Beach
It only seems logical that should you want to find the absolute best beach from which to watch the sunrise, then you should head east. Sand Beach on the eastern edge of Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park is the place where there is nothing between you and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Most of Acadia's coastline is rocky, but this sandy patch invites you to come and enjoy.
Because of the geological makeup of Acadia National Park, there is only one beach that actually has sand and it is appropriately called Sand Beach. The remainder of the Park is comprised of granite topped mountains, woodlands, lakes and ponds, and cobble stone shoreline.
Just off the Ocean Loop Drive, Sand beach is staffed by a lifeguard, however, the water seldom gets warmer than 55 degrees. It is a great way to cool off, but a bit chilly for extended swimming. While there, look around and you may see something that you recognize, even though you may have never been there before. This site was used as part of the scenery n the recent Hollywood Film "Cinder House Rules".
On moonless nights, you can attend a real star show on the beach, which is led by the Park Rangers. To make the most of this opportunity, be sure to go prepared with a blanket, a light jacket, and binoculars.
