Pets
Acadia National Park is Pet Friendly. Acadia National Park is one of the most visited vacation destination spots in the United States. The majority of National Parks are not very welcoming to pets, but when you are traveling to Acadia, you can bring your best friend with you. Acadia is ranked second among National Parks for sights to see and places to walk or hike with dogs.
Acadia National Park ranks very high on the tail-wagging meter. Seeing Eye dogs and other service dogs are allowed anywhere in the Park.
Pet friendly areas that you can enjoy with your favorite four-legged companion include -
- Pets are permitted on over 100 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage roads.
- Blackwoods and Seawall Campgrounds permit pets.
- On Isle au Haut, pets are permitted for day hiking only.
Remember that your best friend should always be on a short leash – 6 feet in length and attended at all times. There is one exception to the leash rule. An area located near Seal Harbor called Little Long Pond is similar to a dog park and here your best friend can “play off lead”.
In addition, remember that it is required that all dog owners pick up after their pets and properly dispose of dog waste.
Some areas within Acadia National Park are off limits to pets and they include –
- Pets (and people) in most lakes in the park because these lakes are used for water supplies.
- Public Buildings
- Ranger-Led Programs
- Wild Gardens of Acadia at Sieur de Monts
Steep trails that require the use of iron rungs and ladders are not conducive for pets.
Therefore, pets are prohibited on the following trails:
- Precipice
- Beehive
- Ladder Trail to Dorr Mountain
- Beech Cliffs Trail
- Perpendicular Trail (Mansell Mountain)
- Jordan Cliffs Trail between Penobscot East Trail and the carriage road
- Duck Harbor Campground on Isle au Haut
Other areas within Acadia National Park are difficult for pets to travel over due to their steep nature and/or difficult terrain. Those areas not recommended for Pets include, but are not limited to the following -
- Acadia Mountain
- Flying Mountain
- Giant Slide
- Cadillac Mountain - west face
- Pond Trail - east end
- Norembega Goat Trail
- Bubbles-Pemetic Trail
- Penobscot Mountain (Spring) Trail
