Park Loop Road
One of the most beautiful stretches of road in the United States is the Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park. This 27-mile road is the main artery for travel throughout the Park. The Park Loop Road first travels alongside the eastern and southern coast of Acadia National Park and then turns north and transects the interior of Acadia traveling by Jordan Pond and Eagle Lake.
The Park Loop Road begins at Hulls Cove and goes south for a distance of three miles. At that point, it becomes a one way road headed east. The placement of the road in Acadia National Park provides a fantastic view around every corner. Sand Beach is a spot where you can stop and if you do not mind the cold water, take a quick dip in the Atlantic Ocean.
Leaving Sand Beach, the road parallels the coastline and provides picturesque views of thousands of years old cliffs and expansive ocean vistas. You will then pass Blackwoods Campground and continue past the Wildwood Stables.
Turning north, Park Loop Road travels though the center of Acadia and passes by Jordan Pond and then winds to its eastern end at Cadillac Mountain. You can reach the summit of Cadillac Mountain on the road.
Nearly 3 million people visit Acadia National Park each year and many of them travel by private vehicle. You can also experience the Park Loop Road on the Island Explorer Shuttle Bus if you do not mind the periodic stops along the way.
