Isle Au Haut

Isle au Haut translates in English to "High Island". This name was given to an elevated piece of land off the coast of Maine by early explorers. In 1943, the community donated one-half of the island to the federal government and it became part of Acadia National Park.

Due to the generosity of community members, nearly one-half of Isle au Haut became a part of Acadia National Park in 1943. Thanks to their willingness to share their wonderful community, a great deal of the island's solitude and natural beauty has been preserved and is still available for travelers and locals alike to experience and enjoy. The remaining portion of the island remains privately owned and continues to support summer vacation residents and a thriving fishing community.

The year round community on Isle au Haut is active and alive. They have a library, a part-time grocery store and a one-room schoolhouse that educates local children through the eighth grade. You can only get to the island via the Isle au Haut mail boat or by private boat.

For those who like to hike, the island has nearly 18 miles of trails. The trails provide a pathway to the ocean shoreline, forested higher ground, marshes, bogs and even a mile-long fresh water lake. Make sure that you go prepared for changes in the weather.

Biking is discouraged on the island, as there are only 4 miles of paved road. The remainder of the roads are extremely rough and should only be used by mountain bikes with good shocks. Bikes are not allowed on the hiking trails. There are limited camping facilities at Duck Harbor Campground.
